Here’s a camera that can satisfy both the needs of beginners and advanced users: to the incredible point-and-shoot functionality (including image stabilization, 21 preset Scene Modes – with Super Macro Mode) adds professional features like: full manual controls, ISO 4000 and RAW shooting, not to mention the 10x optical zoom. The design combines metal and plastic even in color (silver+black), it has an ergonomic body with a good grip, intuitive menu and well-placed buttons.
Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom takes sharp images with accurate colors (nor over nor under-saturated), minor artifacts and no fringing. The auto white balance does a fine job. The in-camera red eye fix also. With this camera you can get an amazing number of 630 shots with standard batteries – impressive. The fast start-up and nearly instant shutter release time ensures a high-speed response. I can not agree more to this statement: “The Olympus SP-510 UZ is one of the best combinations of features, performance and price of any digital camera,” said Michael Barnett, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.

A symbol represents the use of an object in order to express an idea, or, the use of that object in a different way than for what it was initially developed (a fork next to an apple is considered a tool for eating that apple; photographing a fork stabbing an apple gives that fork the meaning of a weapon). In other words, the symbolism is the deeper meaning of things. In Photography, we take for example (the classic example) a single tree on an empty field: it stands for loneliness.
Conceptual Photography, unlike other types of shooting, requires more mental processing, more imagination and out of the box thinking.
You see something – you think different about what’s behind the usual and only then you shoot. The persons next to you will probably not notice the same think as you in the view until you tell them at least the name of your photo.
It’s about associating words with image (first in your mind before shooting): title with photography (then in the process of organizing your images).

Together and Apart – a concept can be symbolized in more than 1 photo

Like I said before, looking thru albums (in paper or digital) of really good photos, you get inspired and mesmerized. This video is the best possible example.

This Samsung camera only has 4 megapixels and the upper model, A503, adds 1 more megapixel. Both are available in 2 colors: silver and black, or, better said, in a combination of the colors in different proportions: a classic but stylish design with a stable grip. Even if it has 4MP, it comes with 5x optical zoom which is more than the standard 3x zoom and a very useful feature. The fact that it uses AA batteries and SD memory cards adds to the usability of the camera in any place and any situation – these accessories are cheaper and easy to find even in supermarkets. The image quality provided by the lenses Samsung uses is more than satisfying, so I highly recommend buying this camera lightweight camera for your kids trips.

Complete Digital Photography is indeed a complete book, covering every aspect on digital shooting and post processing. Previous editions have brought to Ben Long, the author, a huge success. The book explains the digital technology behind the functions and features of the digital cameras, which is why traditional photographers who moved to digital choose it. Filled with step-by-step tutorials, clearly-written examples, and easy-to-follow explanations, it’s a great tool for beginners as well as intermediary photographers.
The book has 4 sections:

  • basic technical foundation,
  • choosing the right camera and software according to the readers needs,
  • the actual shooting (focusing, metering, exposure, using histograms, flash, and all other stuff),
  • digital editing and correction techniques (for both jpeg and raw files) – Tone and color correction, masking, compositing, and retouching.

Complete Digital Photography, Fourth EditionHowever, even if it answers all possible questions in the best manner ever, it’s most of all technical. If you are searching for a book that illustrates with plenty of examples the use of the camera settings and when to apply them, well, that would be something else. The target for this book is the people want to learn about the digital and technical aspects.

David Burnett, as a journalist photographer, traveled a lot in his 36 years of shooting. His carrier started like a real hurricane (after graduating in Political Science): first at Times Magazine, then two years in Vietnam as an employ of Life Magazine. Another two years were spend traveling in a hunt of news for French photo agency Gamma. He continued with Fortune, ESPN Magazine, and many others as well as major Advertising campaigns, including Union Bank of Switzerland, Kodak, Rolex, Merck, even the U.S. Army.
David Burnett
The desire for traveling brought him to all the places on the Earth where something out of common happened (75 countries). News, Feature, and People pictures, as well as landscapes and scenics, all these come out from his camera in the shape of awards that include Magazine Photographer of the Year from the Pictures of the Year Competition, the World Press Photo of the Year, the Robert Capa Award from the Overseas Press Club, White House News Photographers’ Association – Eyes of History Award, and so on.
In 1976, David Alan Burnett co-founded Contact Press Images in New York, and now lives in Washington, DC.
David Burnett
Pictures from his article in the National Geographic (August 2006 issue) on the post-Katrina effects along the Gulf Coast are being shown at the George Eastman House in Rochester, and at the Cabildo Museum in New Orleans. His feature story on Orlando was in the March 2007 National Geographic. The 1979 Iranian revolution, the 2004 Olympics and John Kerry’s presidential campaign are older successful photo reports made by David.
David Burnett

“When you get a picture you like, you really feel you have opened the eyes of the rest of the world to something worth looking at.”
“Ultimately technology is just a tool… It is easy to get caught up with all the gadgets and all the technology, but the most important thing is to be comfortable with the tools you have.”
“After a zillion years of being a magazine photographer, there is still nothing I’d rather be doing, except maybe stand-up comedy.”
