The new Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd reaches a new record in the matter of ultra zoom: not less than 18x optical zoom (and no, it’s not a dSLR). This 8MP camera also features a new anti-blur Dual Image Stabilization system but has a maximum of 1600 ISO at full resolution (higher ISO would have been useless anyway). The face detection includes a new Automatic Red Eye Removal feature. The rest is the same as on it’s predecessor: the FinePix S6000fd. Estimated price: $399.95

FinePix S5800 is also a 8MP camera with a SLR-like design, featuring 2.5-inch LCD screen and 10x optical zoom lens like previous models from the S-series. The S5800 includes a number of features for improved low light shooting (ISO 1600 and Intelligent Flash feature that automatically adjusts sensitivity and flash power for improved photos taken with flash) and image stabilization (PS mode). It is equipped with Super Macro mode that focuses as close as 0.4 inches from a subject and the camera has 12 other scene modes.

FinePix F480 is an entry-level point an shoot (a compact camera for family use unlike the above more robust and complicated ultra zoom). This 8.2MP camera follows the F470 and F650, which are no longer being manufactured. The 4x optical zoom lens system offers wider shooting in a 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) zoom, expanded from the 35-105mm focal range on the F470. The LCD is large enough with 2.7-inch, and the basic features are: 13 scene modes and a Picture Stabilization mode. Estimated price: $179.95

The FinePix F50fd includes Fuji’s Face Detection 2.0 (improved for side profile shots and extreme angles), new dual image stabilization (with CCD-shift technology – mechanical), expanded thumbnail view (new GUI Micro Thumbnail function that displays a 100-image index on the monitor, allowing for users to scan through photos faster), a bigger 2.7-inch LCD, and automatic red-eye correction. It’s a point and shoot compact of 12MP equipped with IrSimple technology that allows users to wirelessly transmit photos from the camera to other IR-enabled devices. Estimated price: $299.95

FinePix Z100fd is a fancy, stylish camera (Shell Pink, Satin Silver, Cappuccino Brown, and Tuxedo Black design) with 8MP, CCD-shift image stabilization, face detection, a new Automatic Red Eye Removal function, 5x optical zoom, 2,7 inch LCD plus Fuji’s IrSimple technology that allows users to wirelessly send photos to other infrared-enabled devices. The camera also has a maximum sensitivity up to 1600 at full resolution for low-light shooting without a flash. Olympus SP-500 is a 10X optical zoom camera, meaning it is an ultra zoom camera, way above the average zoom of other cameras; it provides 6 Megapixel CCD, large 2.5 inch LCD display, full manual controls (including white balance and focus), and plenty of scene modes plus shortcuts and custom button. The size of the camera is bigger than a compact but smaller than a SLR (one of the smaller ultra zooms and the lightest camera in its class) ; it has a pop-up flash and a lens cap on the plastic black body. The buttons are intuitively placed and the hand grip is perfect.
The power-up and shooting times are about average. Noise reduction, panorama mode and panorama stitch software, histogram, build-in red eye removal and frame assist are the main features that would make me choose this ultra zoom digital camera. There is a possibility to shoot in RAW format with camera and that also pleases me a lot. The only thing it misses is image stabilization.
Another advantage of buying this camera is the possibility of adding accessories such as filters and lenses thru the Conversion lens adapter CLA-4 : Wide-angle lens WCON-07 and Telephoto lens TCON-17. However, you cannot attach an external flash to this camera.
The images are sharp, slight brownish and a bit noisy – anyway, quite decent. Some unexplainable thing is that if you are recording a movie with sound you can’t use the zoom, but without sound you can.

Here’s a camera that can satisfy both the needs of beginners and advanced users: to the incredible point-and-shoot functionality (including image stabilization, 21 preset Scene Modes – with Super Macro Mode) adds professional features like: full manual controls, ISO 4000 and RAW shooting, not to mention the 10x optical zoom. The design combines metal and plastic even in color (silver+black), it has an ergonomic body with a good grip, intuitive menu and well-placed buttons.
Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom takes sharp images with accurate colors (nor over nor under-saturated), minor artifacts and no fringing. The auto white balance does a fine job. The in-camera red eye fix also. With this camera you can get an amazing number of 630 shots with standard batteries – impressive. The fast start-up and nearly instant shutter release time ensures a high-speed response. I can not agree more to this statement: “The Olympus SP-510 UZ is one of the best combinations of features, performance and price of any digital camera,” said Michael Barnett, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc.

This Samsung camera only has 4 megapixels and the upper model, A503, adds 1 more megapixel. Both are available in 2 colors: silver and black, or, better said, in a combination of the colors in different proportions: a classic but stylish design with a stable grip. Even if it has 4MP, it comes with 5x optical zoom which is more than the standard 3x zoom and a very useful feature. The fact that it uses AA batteries and SD memory cards adds to the usability of the camera in any place and any situation – these accessories are cheaper and easy to find even in supermarkets. The image quality provided by the lenses Samsung uses is more than satisfying, so I highly recommend buying this camera lightweight camera for your kids trips.

Samsung Digimax S1050 is a compact camera with ergonomic grip, lightweight but not very slim, available in 2 colors: silver and black.
The features that make this camera be on top of the sales are the high megapixels, high optical zoom (5x instead of the usual 3x), advanced shake reduction (ASR) as image stabilization technology and movie stabilizer function, face recognition, high ISO 1600, super macro mode (1 cm close), the presence of manual features and the extra large LCD (3 inch).
An interesting feature, sometimes quite useful, is the Wise Shot: when activate, it takes 2 shots – one with flash on one with flash off, so that later on you can choose the best one. The Movie Mode is pretty advanced; allowing an impressive flexibility considering it’s just a photo camera. About the Effect button and what it does, it might look funny at the beginning, but after that, it’s useless.
The use of AA batteries and SD memory card has the advantage of an easy replacement in a short time anywhere. The image quality is above medium, concluding that S1050 it’s worth the price.

This is a camera with user-friendly ergonomic body design, considering an ergonomic grip. First of all, I like that Samsung thought putting a Manual Mode on a compact camera (but where are Shutter and Aperture Priority?). However, at this high resolution I would have expected at least face detection if not also image stabilization. Good that they put 45MB internal memory at this high resolution camera.
For those seeking a good camera with high megapixel resolution, the Digimax 1030 might be an option. However, if you can spear some more money, I recommend the Digimax 1050 because of the following improvements: face detection included, macro mode up to 1 cm close, longer shutter speed, Shutter Priority and Aperture Priority Modes included, even larger LCD and, the most important, 5x optical zoom instead of 3x.
Otherwise, the performance of these two cameras is quite similar, a good one. The Movie Mode is impressively for a camera meant to take photos. Another thing worth mentioning is the easy of use: the control dial on the top has all the Shooting Modes plus the most used Scene Modes; the Effect button is easy to access and the Direct Print also.

The Canon A series gained in January 2007 a new member with a higher number of megapixels: 7 MP A560. An important improvement is the fact that this model is capable to take 500 shots before the 2xAA batteries rune out. The system now includes Face-detection autofocus, Higher light sensitivity, ISO 1600 (but this is not very useful) and Red-Eye correction in PlayBack Mode. Compared to A550, the LCD is 5 inch wider.
The multitude of functions and menu may be too much for someone who only wants a camera for creating a family album, but it’s a perfect choice for someone who wants a high capability camera, compact enough to fit in a small bag, instead of an expensive heavy SLR.
But one thing here bothers me: the Aperture and Shutter Priority Modes are not present anymore and the Manual Mode only controls the exposure and white balance. The Panoramic Mode is also missing and this is even less understandable.
The long time between the shots taken with flash on is a problem on previous models that still hasn’t been fixed. Another add to the camera usability is the composition grid and I’m mentioning this because it really is useful not only for beginners.
