Here continues the list of the Booth Tours:

JOBO PMA 2008 Booth Tour
German manufacturer JOBO are featuring the new Energy PREMIO Battery range at PMA, developed specifically for use with digital SLRs. Also new are a range of 3 digital photo frames (the ubiquitous product of PMA 2008), plus the return of the photoGPS device, which first surfaced at PMA last year.
Crumpler PMA 2008 Booth Tour
As usual, the Crumpler booth is by the most imaginative of the show – it’s worth a visit all on it’s own! Crumpler have a couple of new products at PMA. The stylish and practical Cork & Fork is a padded photo backpack designed to slot inside Crumpler’s brand new carry-on roller luggage piece, The Period Charmer. Very neat. The Industry Disgrace is a camera neck strap designed for professional photographers carrying heavy camera equipment.
LowePro PMA 2008 Booth Tour
LowePro have a couple of cool new products on their PMA stand. The Flipside bags allow you to remove your camera without having to take the bag off, with no accessible zips when it’s on your back for added secutiry. The FastPack series lets you access your kit from the side while the bag is on your back. Thanks to product manager Tracy Daly for the demo and modelling!
Memory Cards PMA 2008 Booth Tour
A number of memory card companies have announced new products here at PMA, with SanDisk and PNY both introducing 32Gb SDHC cards. I’ve rounded-up the standout products in one gallery.
GE PMA 2008 Booth Tour
GE are showcasing their 2nd generation of impressively-specced compact cameras at PMA. With no less than 8 new models to choose from, the flagship is the E1050, with 3 inch touchscreen LCD, HDMI connectivity and built-in GPS.
Tamron PMA 2008 Booth Tour
Tamron are showing their new lens line-up for 2008 behind glass, including the 70-200 f/2.8, 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 and a couple of lenses featuring a built-in motor for Nikon DSLRs.
Panasonic PMA 2008 Booth Tour>
Panasonic are demoing the prototype of a wireless camera, which was first shown at the CES show at the start of January. This version didn’t look any different, still being based on a modified DMC-TZ3, and Panasonic don’t have any further details on when we might see a final product.
Kodak PMA 2008 Booth Tour
As usual Kodak have a huge booth at PMA, but once again very little of interest unless you’re in the photo-finishing business (which to be fair, a lot of visitors to the show are). The brand new Kodak Easyshare Z1012 IS ultra-zoom compact plus 3 more compacts that were first announced at CES were pretty much it for Kodak this year.
Casio PMA 2008 Booth Tour
Casio’s PMA booth is centered around the incredible EX-F1, which can take 60 frames in 1 second at the full 6 megapixel resolution – you really have to try it out to believe it. Also featured are the pre-requisite incremental compact camera updates in a range of glaringly bright colours, inlcuding the Casio EX-S10, the world’s smallest and thinnest 10 megapixel digital camera.

pma2008PMA 2008 finished on 4th February 2008, and PhotographyBlog posted their PMA 2008 Report, which contains the following images from the show:
Nikon D60 Photos – 20 sample images taken with Nikon’s new entry-level DSLR.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 Photos – 36 sample images, including high ISOs, from Panasonic’s new 10x zoom compact.
Pentax K20D Photos – 40 sample images from Dubai, U.A.E. taken with the 14 megapixel K20d DSLR camera.
Booth Tours – Hundreds of product photos from PMA 2008, organised into 23 different galleries.
Hot Products – PhotographyBlog’s choice of PMA’s hottest products from the hundreds that were introduced at the show.
New Products – A complete listing of all the major products from PMA 2008.

A little extract from the Booth Tours and links:
Epson PMA 2008 Booth Tour
Epson don’t have too much new going on at their small upstairs booth – the highlight was the new-ish Epson R1900 A3+ printer. Their latest range of large-format printers and a customised version of Express Digital Darkroom are also being featured.
HiTi PMA 2008 Booth Tour
Dye-sub printer specialists HiTi had a number of new models on display, although most of them were commercial rather than for home use. We spotted the interesting P110S, which seems to be a direct competitor to the Epson Picturemate series, and the admittedly specialist S420 passport photo printer.
Wacom PMA 2008 Booth Tour
The highlight of Wacom’s booth was the dimunitive Wacom Cintiq 12wx interactive, touch-sensitive pen display (which we’ve already reviewed). The Cintiq 12wx allows you to work in Photoshop or similar graphics applications by drawing directly on the 12.1 inch high-resolution LCD monitor.
SmartParts PMA 2008 Booth Tour
Smartparts introduced a world’s first at PMA 2008 with the launch of the 8 inch SP8PRT – the first and only digital picture frame to feature an integrated photo printer. The SP8PRT features some basic image editing options and produces a 6×4, dye-sub inch print in around 55 seconds. The print quality was fine, but whether or not you want to pay the $279 asking price is up to you…
Eye-Fi PMA 2008 Booth Tour
For a product that has generated so much interest at PMA and during the last few months, Eye-Fi had a relatively tiny booth at PMA tucked away in the far corner of the show. The Eye-Fi Card is the world’s first wireless SD memory card for digital cameras. Only available in the USA at the moment, the current 2Gb version costs $99.

The California Heritage Museum is pleased to present “Lights! Camera Glamour! The Photography of George Hurrell”. As studio photographer for MGM, Warner Brothers and Columbia, Hurrell shot some of the world’s most beautiful and intriguing personalities, creating the template for the Hollywood glamour portrait. The exhibition follows his career from his arrival in Southern California as a promising young painter to his acclaim as the foremost glamour photographer of his time.

The exhibition is drawn from the Pancho Barnes Trust Estate Archive and the Estate of George Hurrell, and is curated by Dr. Louis D’Elia and the staff of the California Heritage Museum. A series of films featuring the movies stars Hurrell immortalized will be shown at Santa Monica Public Library along with a program of lectures. A catalogue with an essay by Virginia Postrel author of “The Substance of Style” accompanies the exhibition.
jean harlowThe exhibition shows the classic Hurrell photographs: Joan Crawford dramatically lit, her face emerging from the darkness; Douglas Fairbanks Jr, enigmatic in a top hat; Garbo; Jean Harlow seemingly naked beneath her huge coat; Rita Hayward, Peter Lorre, Myrna Loy, Ramon Novarro, Jane Russell, disheveled for “The Outlaw” Norma Shearer and Anna Mae Wong. And from the 70s and 80s, Joan Collins and Shannon Tweed shot for Playboy Magazine, Grace Jones, Queen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brooke Shields, Sharon Stone and Tom Waits.
The California Heritage Museum is located in an 1894 Historic Landmark house, at 2612 Main Street, in Santa Monica. Hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. General admission is $5, students and seniors are $3 and children 12 and under are free. Parking is free and handicapped facilities are available. On Sundays, the museum hosts a Farmer’s Market in its parking lot. Visitors to the museum can find parking in adjacent “quarter metered” parking lots.

cmosSony announced the development of a 35mm full size (diagonal:43.3mm/Type 2.7) 24.81 effective megapixel, ultra-high speed high image quality CMOS image sensor designed to meet the increasing requirement for rapid image capture and advanced picture quality within digital SLR cameras.
The newly developed CMOS image sensor combines unique circuit design technology with Sony’s advanced fabrication expertise, such as advanced planarization for minimizing fluctuation, to realize 35mm, full size, 24.81 effective megapixel resolution. Sony’s “Column-Parallel A/D Conversion Technique” also provides each column within the sensor with its own A/D converter, minimizing image degradation caused by the noise that arises during analog processing while at the same time delivering an extremely high signal conversion speed.

The enhanced image quality generated by the sensor’s 24.81 effective megapixel resolution, wide range of graduation expression achieved by its full size broad dynamic range, and the low noise, high resolution, ultra-responsive performance provided by Sony’s Column-Parallel A/D Conversion technique enable it to meet the ever-increasing requirements within high performance digital SLR cameras.

Sony will target for mass production of this CMOS image sensor within this year.

pma2008While I’ve been gone, a lot of rumors started to spread around the Internet about the PMA Show. This year, the most important show of the year will take place between Jan. 31 – Feb. 2, 2008, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nev. You should expect bigger storage cards, bigger zoom on compact digital cameras, higher image quality, high frame rates (frames per second), larger LCD screens, more CMOS sensors. Also, dpreview states that “I’m pretty confident that 2008 will go down as the year of the digital SLR with perhaps up to 25 new DSLRs over the course of the year.” I bet you allready noticed that while walking on the street, there are more and more people with a DSLR hanging their neck than compacts in their pockets.
The official PMA2008 report also states:
“The digital SLR camera market is booming. Compared to last year the DSLR camera sales increased with impressive numbers and it seems the digital SLR camera has become a mass consumer product. New entry level D-SLR cameras with 6 Megapixels surprisingly were welcomed very well by the amateur photographer and it seems that within this segment of the digital camera market the resolution range of 6 – 10 Megapixel fulfils the need of the amateur photographer. Without lenses the digital SLR camera would not be complete and it is for that reason we see a huge number of digital SLR lens introductions appear this year.”
I believe this is a good think and a challenging one also. Photography is no longer an expensive hobby and more competitive photographers know on my door too. This also means that, from now on, it’s more important to concentrate on the photography and not on the camera you have, so keep an eye on photoaxe tutorials.
Here’s a list of the brand new camera’s of 2008 that will be presented at the PMA2008; and, before that, I’ll post the specifications on photoaxe.com:

I thought you may want to know about these workshops (which you can find and apply to at www.sundanceworkshop.com):
The Spring Workshops, May 7-11, 2008, will feature travel and landscape photography. Workshops include:

“Photographing on the Move”

Travel photographer Nevada Wier will show how photographing on the move in foreign places requires the combination of technical expertise, culture competence, intuitive awareness, curiosity and a dash of panache. A specialist in adventure and travel photography, Ms. Wier will discuss how to combine the technical, practical and creative aspects of travel photography in order to get an image that elevates itself above the usual travel clichés. Read more about Ms. Wier’s work at www.nevadawier.com.

“A Natural Eye”
An impassioned teacher and landscape photographer, Eddie Soloway brings vast experience in both nature and photography. His intense workshop will help students look at the natural world with fresh new eyes — striving to develop a natural eye first, and then introducing the technical skills of photography. The Sundance Resort offers a truly magical “studio” in late spring, with snowcapped mountains above and the landscape below bursting with new foliage. Read more about Mr. Soloway at www.eddiesoloway.com.

The Summer Workshops, August 25-29, 2008, will provide tutorial-style training on nature and portrait photography. Workshop courses include:

“Exploring Your Personal Vision”
Jazz performer turned world famous nature photographer Tony Sweet, conducts a workshop that meets daily for a sunrise photo shoot (weather permitting) followed by a session to process and critique images. The improvisational, spontaneous and abstract nature of jazz, are also integral elements of nature photography. The day will end with a late afternoon/sunset shooting session. Class time will include a presentation, critique session and a review of digital workflow information. Read more about Mr. Sweet at www.tonysweet.com.

“Portraits on Location”
Bobbi Lane is an award-winning commercial photographer specializing in creative portraits on location and in the studio. The course provides an opportunity to explore in depth all the elements required to achieve the desired effect — working with both natural light and strobes, studio or portable flash, and photographing models using locations for composition and story-telling. Lighting is crucial to a successful photo and she will cover lighting patterns, quality and lighting ratios. Ms. Lane’s website is www.bobbilane.com.

The Fall Workshops, November 5-9, 2008, include travel and adventure sports. Workshops are:

“The Art of Travel Photography: Capturing the Essence”
Brenda Tharp, an award-winning outdoor and travel photographer, is recognized for her strong design sense and personal vision. This Workshop will open with a visual presentation covering many aspects of travel photography, including how to capture a sense of place, work with and photograph people, work in mixed light conditions, use flash and manage a digital workflow on the road. Designed to help advanced amateurs gain insight on how to create better travel photographs and tell a story with pictures, this Workshop is scheduled during the country’s #1 Cowboy Poetry Gathering & Buckaroo Fair in nearby Heber City. This unique event celebrates the cowboy, the cowboy poet and everything truly western. To view Ms. Tharp’s work visit www.brendatharp.com.

“People in the Landscape”
Tom Bol has built his career photographing adventure sports and environmental portraits in remote locations that present unique challenges in getting a quality image. From action sports to intimate portraits, photographing people in the outdoor landscape can present a variety of challenges and rewards. During this workshop, Tom will not only discuss basic concepts but also techniques to capture fresh perspectives and unique angles for dramatic images. Workshop topics include composition, exposure, environmental portraits, point-of-view techniques, off camera TTL flash, reflector use and digital workflow. You will also spend a memorable night of light painting and star trail photography. Mr. Bol’s web site is: www.tombolphoto.com

Beyond Sight Photo Exhibition in London

Through using audio descriptions and tactile relief images, the exhibition will be accessible to all, furthering our awareness of the relationships between vision, blindness, sensory experience and imagery. This show will demonstrate that the loss of one sense need not be prohibitive to participation in photography either as an artist or a viewer.

A documentary exploring the subject of blind photography, filmed on location at the workshops in Mexico and London will also be shown at the exhibition. On the 8th December both project participants and staff will be talking about their experiences at the gallery.

Fujifilm sponsored a seminar on Digital Forensic Photography (as part of the grand opening of the new B&H state-of-the-art Event Space in the B&H Super Store in New York City) featuring Fujifilm IS PRO and IS-1 Cameras.
This Event, a free one indeed, will take place in NYC (New York City) at the B&H Event Space (420 9th Avenue) on Wednesday, November 28, from 10AM – 5PM. All you have to do in order to attend is to register in advance (the number of participants is probably limited).

C. Jason Guffey, a professional photographer with ten years experience as a Crime Scene Investigator is going to hold a full-day educational seminar for law enforcement and forensic photographers.
This seminar is designed to enhance the skills of Forensic/Crime Scene photographers by demonstrating the applications of the Fujifilm IS PRO and IS-1 Ultra Violet Infrared (UVIR) cameras.
For more information, or to reserve a seat at Fujifilm’s ‘Digital Forensic Photography’ seminar, contact Jennifer Diamond at jdiamond@bhphoto.com.

By attending this special event, attendees will learn a variety of digital forensic techniques utilizing infrared and ultraviolet light exposure that can be used in the lab, or in an on-site investigative scene for forensic and law enforcement professionals. The class will provide attendees with hands-on experience using the Fujifilm UVIR cameras that will help them better understand the camera settings, filters, and lighting. Attendees are encouraged to bring equipment assigned by their departments, or use the cameras provided during the seminar.
